Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is an incredible organization that offers financial support to people in the construction trade who have life-altering injuries. Once a year the association honors various recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, born in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and in 2003 bought ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and obtained his HVAC and general contracting license. In 2013, Adil suffered a massive stroke at only 48 years old. He lost the use of his left arm and the stroke left his left leg severely impaired, resulting in foot drop. Only able to walk with a heavy brace, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors feared that he would ultimately end up restricted to a wheelchair.

Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their sole source of income, causing financial tension on the couple with four children, three of which were in college. Their hopes were lifted when Adil was introduced to the WalkAid System, a device that uses functional electrical stimulation to help someone with Adil’s condition walk again. Unfortunately, Adil and Laila were not able to afford the equipment in addition to the comprehensive rehab that would be required so he could understand how to use it.

Fortunately, an employee at WalkAid referred Adil and Laila to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the incredible grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has already experienced wonderful success. His muscle is no longer indicating atrophy and is actually starting to regenerate, bringing hope back to Adil and Laila.
